Regtests output checking may fail depending on the installed imagemagick
version: see

A new -dissimilarity-threshold option was added in ImageMagick 6.5.0.9 and
does the trick, but it's incompatible with older, wider-available versions
(e.g. 6.3.7).

Hence the need for a flexible solution to make sure that the regtests
comparison doesn't get broken in the meantime.
