Thanks; I fixed 1 by forcing an accidental !  and change 2 as you suggested.

Joe, could you check the horizontal/vertical words in
"optimal-page-breaking-hstretch.ly" ?  I'm not certain about the
relationship between horizontal and vertical adjustments being done by
the spacing code.  I'm definitely suspicious about the final sentence,
though.
