Hi Jake,

Is it possible that the font cache files are being created in some
other directory? I realize that the .lilypond-fonts.cache-2 directory
is generated for you, but Fontconfig might be storing the cache files
elsewhere (for some unknown reason).

If the font caching was not occurring anywhere, then you should not be
seeing long delays every time you compile a file, since the caching
would not be happening at all.

I will make sure to update issue #975 if any progress is made. You
can subscribe to the issue by "starring" it on the tracker if you'd
like.
