Thanks for the review! Each of these was a deliberate decision, but not
necessarily
the final answer.
In the section
http://lilypond.org/web/about/automated-engraving/typography-features
it is the Henle examples that are missing (if I understand your description
correctly). This was done in the case of the flat symbol because of the
larger set of
font examples that follows. The ledger lines were then made to match.
The replacing of the Software section
http://lilypond.org/web/about/automated-engraving/software
was even more deliberate: its the reason I volunteered for the rewrite. The
ugly beam
edge was fixed the same year in maintenance version 2003b, and the flat
collision is
actually quite difficult to produce. A simple "update layout" command would
have
solved the spacing, and in current versions almost every edit triggers an
update.
Hopefully the new version demonstrates the aesthetic differences between
the Finale
and LilyPond while highlighting more substantial shortcomings in Finale
than the old
essay did. (I suppose the reader will have to decide whether I was
successful.)
