Regarding lyric descenders, this is not really a problem
with pure height estimation; rather, it is a problem in
approximating systems with bounding boxes

Well, that's what I meant. It's about one's definition of "pure-height". My working definition of pure-height is "estimated-for-breaking-purposes height as opposed to actual height". I think this definition is more correct than "height of the bounding box", because our "begin/rest" hack tries to improve the accuracy of pure-height by
replacing rectangles with Line_shapes.  Anyway, this is academic.
