Thanks to all for the discussion, the corrective work and for LilyPond  
itself.  My interest is in (re-)lyricizing classical music.  I listen to  
Midis to select the music I need.  In order to produce scores, I need to  
use midi2ly to create a first draft for the score.  I would prefer to use  
Windows XP Home for this, but I will install and use a Linux, if necessary.

Referring to Sec. 5.1 of the LilyPond Application Usage manual, I am told  
to invoke a command of the form midi2ly [option]… midi-file.  I have tried  
this with command-line invocations such as C:\temp\midi2ly.py  
c:\temp\sample1.mid  .  Nothing happens, except a DOS-looking window  
flashes by.  Doesn't midi2ly.py need to be compiled?  I haven't used Python  
in the past, so could someone provide some instructions on this?
