It complicates life for programmers, and complicates life for users by  
making the input syntax more ambiguous.

The problem came from a broken conversion program.

Sure.  And FTR, I'm not saying that we absolutely *don't* want this  
functionality.  But I'm not certain that we *do* want it, so if somebody  
runs off and makes a patch to implement it, we reject the patch just  
because we don't want the functionality.

I don't think it's fair to potential contributors if we log enhancement  
requests for which a technically perfect patch would be rejected.  At  
least, not without warning any potential contributors of this danger.
