Well, one could make the opposite argument: what's the point in *not* treating a~b as a slur?

It complicates life for programmers, and complicates life for users by making the input syntax more ambiguous.

(At least, from a "lax" user's point of view, as Johan mentioned in his first email.)

The problem came from a broken conversion program.

(FTR: As I explained on the list, *I* am not convinced that this is needed at all. But some people, including David, seemingly agreed that it would be a nice "feature" to have.)

Sure. And FTR, I'm not saying that we absolutely *don't* want this functionality. But I'm not certain that we *do* want it, so if somebody runs off and makes a patch to implement it, we reject the patch just because we don't want the functionality.

I don't think it's fair to potential contributors if we log enhancement requests for which a technically perfect patch would be rejected. At least, not without warning any potential contributors of this danger.
