This glyph has been spotted by Swiss user Bernard Meylan on the -fr list: it seems that it was commonly used in ancient French editions to indicate some kind of prall ornaments.

Unlike the scripts we use, it wasn't printed above or below the staff but on the left side of the note, always between staff lines (much like augmentation dots, except on the other side). As a result, I'm afraid a dedicated engraver would be required.

Please have a look at the attached examples, taken from a Bernier cantata printed under Louis XIV.

However, it would be nicer to have this natively in LilyPond (spacing-wise, etc.).
