I've done quite a lot of extra looking at the "first-system" problem and  
found the easiest way to get my thoughts in order and to explain it was to  
create a web page.  It's slightly work in progress still (see the note at  
the end) but I think it's useful.  If everyone is happy I'll open a new  
issue to capture just this.
