Hey,

I had this same problem quite a while ago and although there have been some
discussions regarding the chord symbols nothing has changed.
The problem with chord symbols is that afaik there is no defined standard
just many conventions strongly influenced by personal tastes. And although
you think that your suggestions will improve the output (and I agree with
you), many will not.

But since Lilypond offers many ways for individual tweaking I wrote a
function that creates chord symbols to my like. The only downside is taht
the chords are created in a lyrics context and a lyrics context above the
staff behaves a little weird sometimes but so far I managed quite well.
