Is there no way to change this behaviour, though? Visually it's very distracting
to have lyrics not aligned to one another among voices. 

It would not be a problem if the voices were all slurred at the same moment, but
it is common in choral music to have one part in motion while the others are
still. In every piece of printed choral music I've ever seen, in these places
the lyrics are printed aligned to one another, not differently depending on
which voice is slurred.

Is there some way to mimic this behaviour present in published scores using
lilypond?
