On my system, I downgraded Fontconfig, compiled LilyPond git against that,  
and I'm not seeing a difference in font selection.  That is,  
Sazanami-Mincho-Regular is still selected, when I expected DejaVuSans to be  
selected.

I interpret this as meaning that the Fontconfig bump to 2.8.0 was okay...

I now believe that this is a defect with LilyPond's Pango integration.   
I'll investigate.
