http://code.google.com/p/lilypond/issues/detail?id=1229The situation in the upper line of the last comment, with the bar extended to make room for lyrics, never arose through 95 pages of Handel's Messiah (set in Lilypond by Nicolas). There was always a stem or something protruding from the staff in every part.
So, whether good or bad, we are unlikely to see the side effect in anything larger than a regression test.
If a bar-line lengthened for lyrics ever causes someone trouble, he or she can: \override VerticalAxisGroup #'nonstaff-relatedstaff-spacing #'minimum-distance = #4.5 %for Lyrics above the staff, 3.5, as distance is measured to the baseline
