Recent versions of FontForge provide access to the --enable-double  
configure option by inspecting the output of `fontforge --version'.  For  
example, my self-compiled version yields

The `-D' at the end of the second line indicates that it has been compiled  
with --enable-double.  If there is `-LD' instead, fontforge has been  
compiled with --enable-longdouble, which should work also for lilypond.
