The "critical regression" thing was a complete brain fart from me and should be scornfully ignored. I also now agree that the idea of an \override for this specific glyph should be dropped.

However, I am aghast that the "font switching architecture" is going nowhere. As far as I understand it,
  1. we can switch to a different OTF font.  (aka "gonville")
  2. we *CANNOT* switch to a different metafont font ?
This sounds ludicrous to me. Is #2 actually true? if it is, then would fixing it require more than 30 minutes of work?

I feel as though I'm missing something here.
