The way in which you wrote it, it did sound like a diagnosis to me at 
first read.

Not at all, I provided information from what I know, and stopped when I 
could not provide any more valid information given the input. I got 
somewhat interested in the problem, but I'm not affected by it, so I am 
just helping someone else out. I would also like to know if the 
information I provided holds the road.

I have no problem reading your message again and taking it as an 
educated guess, but upon the initial reading it did sound a lot like a 
diagnosis, even though there is probably not enough supporting evidence.

So, what should someone do with the information you posted? Either the 
poster knows this information by himself already, in which case he also 
knows how to check this possibility and maybe even fix it, but then you 
wouldn't need to post it, right? Or he didn't know about parallel make 
and how it works, in which case, what? I think a few hints on how to 
verify that what you say is the actual cause of what is happening would 
be welcome.

Since you replied to me instead of the original poster, this adds 
confusion to the whole interpretation. I know all the information that 
you provided about parallel make, but I do not necessarily come to the 
same guess as to what the problem really is. Rather, I have a few 
guesses, including this one.

The point of my reply was simply that this is only one possible educated 
guess, among other possible educated guesses. I don't think that was 
apparent from your message.

One should be careful not to take such guesses as postulates, as it 
seems I did. I don't think we want someone (the poster, or a good 
samaritan willing to spend some of their free time happily fixing things 
up in the lilypond build system) to spend time tracking down an evil 
make rule with side effects that removes a file midway through the build 
when, heck, we don't even know, for one, if the file was ever created in 
the first place. Imagine that, that's a lot of wasted time. Much better 
would be to establish the cause first. That's all.
