I still seems strange that \textLengthOn is failing for you in 
'string-number-around-slur.ly' after this patch, because the patch doesn't 
touch text lengths.  But I will stop worrying because, Mike is likely to drop 
this patch, and the test intended to test text length, 'non-empty-text' showed 
no change for you.
