I consider it likely that this is issue 1997. Can those that experienced
the bug here
a) report compiler version and platform (i686 ?)
b) check whether applying the fix for 1997 makes a difference for them

Apply with
git cherry-pick df74defbb64026811fe676309a236fe649116d45
and rerun ./autogen.sh. If the line
checking options for known g++ tail call bug... -fno-optimize-sibling-calls
is in the output, it is very likely that this bug is fixed.
If it isn't (namely if the -fno-optimize... part is missing) then that fix
will not be relevant to this issue.
