The bug-fix portion, split off as issue 2060, is in the code base and due  
to appear in development release 2.15.21.  This fix gives the output at  
left  (2060) in the image.

The patch in comment 2 plans to go further.  Its self-test says
"Hairpins do not collide with SpanBars. Hairpins should, however, go to the  
end of a line when the SpanBar is not present."
At the moment (4 Dec) it is working backwards, as shown at right.
