I remembered that Dynamics are by default centered between their neighboring 
staves.  So a better way to get what you probably want is, at the beginning of 
each Dynamics line that should stay close to the line above :

\new Dynamics {
  \override VerticalAxisGroup #'staff-affinity = #UP
