For the record, this patch only makes a minor reduction in the number of  
lines for a full build - about 1500 lines fewer, taking the total down to  
around 112,000.  However, it has the benefits identified in the review - it  
makes it easier to correct bad texi syntax (which is normally ignored) and  
it reduces the output of make -s doc on a previously good make doc run from  
1813 lines to 220.
