http://code.google.com/p/lilypond/issues/detail?id=2165This one is purely aesthetics. It reduces the opening of hairpins when they are broken. From 1/2 to 1/3 of full height on the soft end, and from 1.0 to 2/3 on the loud end. Attached are (inadequate, but use your imagination) before- and after examples.
