Comment #2 on issue 2190 by chris.morganiser: Tuplet positioning on beamed notes is ugly
http://code.google.com/p/lilypond/issues/detail?id=2190I considered whiteout (though I didn't know how to do it in Lilypond--but I dare say I would have found it quickly enough if I'd looked), but ended up deciding it was probably easier to just limit the scope of this to the fact that tuplets on beamed notes behave differently from tuplets on non-beamed dittos, and suggest that the former be changed to the latter. Now I see what you've got, though, I like the look of it for TupletNumbers without TupletBrackets, provided the whiteout gets fixed to be slanted.
Now my opinion is that tuplets with no brackets should be placed close and have whiteout (as demonstrated in Janek's example but with whiteout fixed to slant for equal spacing), and tuplets with brackets drawn above the stave (as they currently are for non-beamed notes and as in my original suggestion for beamed notes). This would then require changes for both beamed and non-beamed notes. I say with brackets above as otherwise the brackets will hit the line, which is ugly--and whiteout won't improve it.
