http://code.google.com/p/lilypond/issues/detail?id=1967I've picked the third option, ignored the history and looked at the current code. So far, I have not been able to find anything that could be held responsible for reducing the number of stream events, namely dropping or merging them.
I have not been able to discern the purpose of the used data structures either, so this might just be a shortcoming of my analytical skills.
