I agree that the current output looks bad.  However, in my opinion it
would be better to solve this using shorter variants of flags.  This
was discussed a year and half ago, starting here

and spreading to multiple threads.  I wrote some patches, but i lacked
enough experience then to glue everything together; the patches are
now in limbo.  However, if you'd like to cooperate in this area, i'll
be glad to resurrect my work in September (no time now :( ).
