It's not automatic - you have control.  Try using voices, and checking the 
output for error messages:

\new Staff = "up" {
 \voiceOne f''8 e''8 e'' e''
}

Without voicing, we get:

9:8: warning: ignoring too many clashing note columns
 f''8
      e''8 e'' e''
