what exactly is this option - -dpixmap-format=pngalpha - supposed to do
and
how should the output be different? (I've never used that)

Eluze

Sets PNG background to transparent.
and how do I see that , eg. with IrfanView (I see a white background which I
can change to red blue and green)?

Not sure what infranview does but something like, draw a red square, past the png over the top, the red should show through :)
