The original code is quite awful and I am not particularly surprised
that it fails after issue 3489 has passed (look at its issue
description).  However, it seems somewhat sinister that the
rearrangement you describe above should make a difference as it does not
look like it should affect the basic context hierarchy and what can be
found at which level.
