It does work as it should. In slurs and similar, positions aren’t immediately applied such as in beams, but serve to choose from the number of candidates LilyPond makes (and bypass the normal selection mechanisms). So you may be lucky in that your positions choice happens to match one of the candidates, or you may not, and there is no candidate near your preferred position. This is documented also.
So that explains the ‘leap’. Yours, Simon
