Surely we shouldn’t advocate such usage in the manual (in this case one should really use \tempo). As a more illustrative example, I’d suggest:

  \mark "Chorus"
  g2 c,
  \bar "|."
}

Sorry for not submitting a patch myself – I’m not familiar with the process yet and don’t have time right now :-(.
