You need to point gdb to the executable, not the script which execute it.
For example the absolute path to my lilypond 2.18.2-executable is:
It's obviously in my home directory.
gdb lilypond/usr/bin/lilypond

Then invoke by doing
run path-to-the-file-you-want-be-executed

Then do

The sequence for me was:

gdb lilypond/usr/bin/lilypond
run lilypondH/Test/forum/unfinished-tie-crash.ly

You should see something like:

gdb lilypond/usr/bin/lilypond
GNU gdb (Ubuntu 7.11.1-0ubuntu1~16.04) 7.11.1
Copyright (C) 2016 Free Software Foundation, Inc.
License GPLv3+: GNU GPL version 3 or later <http://gnu.org/licenses/gpl.html>

No stack.

The last command does not give any result, ofcourse. No crash with 2.18.2
