        Apparently, target specific variables, even though marked for
 export, are not exported tot he commands (however, the original value
 is removed as well). Umm. Perhaps this example shall make this
 clearer:

__> cat Makefile 
export TARGET = unset
%: TARGET = $@
%:
        @echo "'${TARGET}'"  # prints '$@', OK
        @echo "'$${TARGET}'" # prints ''!

__> make Some_Target
'Some_Target'
''
__> 
======================================================================
