I tried to compile Unix::Syslog from CPAN for perl, and i've got something
like this:

cpan> install Unix::Syslog
Going to read /cpanperl/sources/authors/01mailrc.txt.gz
Going to read /cpanperl/sources/modules/02packages.details.txt.gz
  Database was generated on Sun, 09 Sep 2001 13:59:34 GMT
  HTTP::Date not available
Going to read /cpanperl/sources/modules/03modlist.data.gz
Running install for module Unix::Syslog
Running make for M/MH/MHARNISCH/Syslog-0.95.tar.gz

  CPAN: MD5 security checks disabled because MD5 not installed.
  Please consider installing the MD5 module.

Checking if your kit is complete...
Looks good
Writing Makefile for Unix::Syslog
/usr/local/bin/perl -I/usr/local/lib/perl5/5.6.1/sun4-solaris
-I/usr/local/lib/perl5/5.6.1 /usr/local/lib/perl5/5.6.1/ExtUtils/xsubpp
-typemap /usr/local/lib/perl5/5.6.1/ExtUtils/typemap Syslog.xs >
Syslog.xsc && mv Syslog.xsc Syslog.c
gcc -c  -fno-strict-aliasing -I/usr/local/include -D_LARGEFILE_SOURCE
-D_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64 -O   -DVERSION=\"0.95\" -DXS_VERSION=\"0.95\" -fPIC
-I/usr/local/lib/perl5/5.6.1/sun4-solaris/CORE  Syslog.c
cp Syslog.pm blib/lib/Unix/Syslog.pm
AutoSplitting blib/lib/Unix/Syslog.pm (blib/lib/auto/Unix/Syslog)
Running Mkbootstrap for Unix::Syslog ()
chmod 644 Syslog.bs
cp Syslog.bs blib/arch/auto/Unix/Syslog/Syslog.bs
chmod 644 blib/arch/auto/Unix/Syslog/Syslog.bs
cc1: Invalid option `-fno-strict-aliasing'  ============= problem
make: *** [Syslog.o] Error 1
  /usr/local/bin/make -j3 -- NOT OK
Running make test
  Can't test without successful make
Running make install
  make had returned bad status, install seems impossible

U have newest packages of GCC, make, automake from

I don't know, if this is a bug or something.

My system is Sun Solaris 7.
