Make errors

Can you help me with the following error which comes from a make check from
make 3.79.1 on a Solaris 8 machine:

Making check in glob
Making check in i18n
gcc -DALIASPATH=\"/usr/local/share/locale:.\"
-DLOCALEDIR=\"/usr/local/share/locale\" -DLIBDIR=\"/usr/local/lib\"

-c ar.c

make: Fatal error: Command failed for target `ar.o'
Current working directory /usr/local/make-3.79.1
make: Fatal error: Command failed for target `check-recursive'
.
I get a similar error with just a make, and I am also unable to do a make of
openssl-0.9.6b or openssh-2.9p2. I am trying to compile the make thinking that
it might solve the other problems if I use a gnu-make. I have gcc-3.0.1 and
zlib-1.1.3 already installed and working. It finds the correct compiler - goes
through the configure without error - but then errors out in the make on all
three. Thanks for any help you can give me.
