Hello,

I want to let people who might care know that I've built 'make' 3.80rc1
from patched source on MinGW in msys.

I didn't use CVS source (which probably should be done, as filing
reports to GNU make's maintainer, Paul D. Smith, should probably be done
too) but instead used source obtained via FTP (ftp.paulandleslie.org)
and then patched with a patch published on the GNU make mailing list.

Paul Smith may be making a rc2 release soon (I read that on a 'make'
mailing List, don't have a citation of it). For the moment, however, I
wanted to ask those who might be interested in having a new version of
'make' to use on MinGW, to be aware of my work.

This was pretty difficult porting labor. I used as a crutch the MinGW
make src package (version 3.79.1; mingw.sourceforge.net) and the notes
and Makefile.mingw's contained therein. Basically that package seemingly
is (largely, NOT exclusively) based on work done by Mumit Khan quite
some time ago. One question I want to throw out is, has not anyone else
done any work with porting make to MinGW (-MSYS) since then?

My build doesn't pass all of the tests in the test 'rig' (which is
written in ancient Perl -- its a decade old in places) which is itself
buggy.

As it stands, there are many "build bugs" pertaining to MinGW-MSYS in
make-3.80rc1; it is not written so as to take advantage of any
`configure'-type tool on Win32 platforms (it builds basically OOB on
Cygwin).

Best Regards,
    Soren Andersen
