Thank you very much for the quick reply!  So let me see if I 
understand correctly.  I wont be able to compile GCC or MAKE
on my system until I get the latest version of MAKE.  Or is there
another work around?

Please choose only one of help-make or bug-make.

This is a problem with the configure script generated by the version of
autoconf used by GNU make 3.79.1, HP-UX 11, and GCC 3.x.  The next
version of GNU make will fix this.

If you don't want to wait you can get a pretest of the next version in:
