Ooops, I sent this mail too early, before getting to the conclusion.
Anyway, I think my use of .PHONY: is a little fishy, even if it works.
I'd really like to know how one is supposed to solve this problem.

And I also think that the GNU Make manual needs to explain how to do.
I think it's quite a common headache.
