I applied the patch and the problem is fixed.

When you say "already been fixed in the source", do you mean the source
in cvs or the released source on the ftp site?  If it's the latter, then
I don't think so (the date on the tar file on 
ftp://ftp.gnu.org/pub/gnu/make/make-3.80.tar.gz is 10/04/2002 3:23am, 
and the date on the bug is 10/14/02).  So it's likely that other
people who download the tar gz file from the ftp site will also get
the unpatched source (like I did).
