These lines are not present in the FSF version of GNU make.  If you're
seeing them it means you're using the Cygwin version of GNU make, which
has been modified by Cygwin.

That version of GNU make is not really supported by this mailing list;
please contact the Cygwin development team for problems with that
version.

I've received no other reports of VPATH not working in GNU make 3.80,
but if you can reproduce this with the vanilla FSF GNU make, please
contact the address@hidden mailing list and see what they have to say
about it (I can't support the Windows port, since I don't own any
Windows systems).
