Follow-up Comment #1, bug #17448 (project make):

I found a very annoying problem which seems related to this issue (and only
apply to v >= 4.2 which includes function `file`):

This one will read `filename`:
$(file <filename)

This one will read `filename ` (with space behind):
$(file <filename\ )

This one will fail silently:
$(file <filename )
