I'm looking through the information sent by Gerben Wierda now.  My guess is
that this is something that was reported late in 2001, which I'd thought was
no longer an issue (a bug introduced by using autoconf 2.52 rather than 2.13).
I may be able to spot the cause of the problem by reviewing the files made
by running the configure script.  I sent him a copy of the configure script
generated using 2.13, but he didn't reply to that message.
