yes (autoconf's developers have their own ideas about host and target
which I've resigned myself to using...)

but I'm able to build dll's(*).  You can see that in the mingw-logs.zip
which I sent on Monday.  It's been workable for about a year - if I
recall correctly it may depend on having dlltool available as part of
the cross-compiler tools (initially I thought I would have to use that
tool directly).  However, my script does this via the compiler itself,
using the mk_shared_lib.sh script to set up the compiler options.

(*) however, I'm only building them - I had in mind creating an installer
    using NSIS (for which there's a package in newer Fedora and Debian)
    but because that program is - hmm cumbersome - incorporating it into
    my builds will take a sizable chunk of scripting.  zip-files are ok
    for the way I'm using the files, at the moment.
