Resizing an ext3 FS with parted ?

Hi!

I noticed some confusing things using parted-1.4.16-8 on a RHL7.2/i386 system.

If I resize the root FS ( type is ext3 ) then it looks like everything went 
fine.
But I really doubt that on-line resizing works !
(this was on a normally booted system )

On another occasion, when trying to resize a mounted ext3 partition, parted 
gives a warning:
Warning: Partition is being used
( I booted with the admin-CD 7.2 , mounted my root FS from hda7 and then tried 
to
enlarge it from parted )

So can it resize mounted file systems or not ?
