Problem running lilo from Parted boot disk

Hi,
    I recently downloaded the partboot.img and partroot-1.6.5.img
files.  I have been able to successfully use the Parted book disk to
mkpartfs, etc.  Although when I try to execute lilo I get the error
"FATAL: cannot determine library version".  Here are the commands that
lead to the error.
mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/linux
chroot /mnt/linux  /sbin/lilo -v

    Any ideas how I might get this to work?
