Thanks for the response. The CPU load was 0% as I recall. I looked at the dmesg output and didn't remember seeing anything. After doing some more investigation, I discovered that I could accomplish what I wanted to do by first resizing my ext3 file system using resize2fs and then using parted to resize the partition. I successfully turned a ~115GB partition into a ~20GB partition.

I did it all using the rescue boot from the redhat9 install CD.
