I don't think that will change something but there is a 1.6.6 version (I

That's a real bad error...

I suggest you try the diagnostic tools from seagate themselve... You 
seems to have access to a win98 system so I guess you won't have trouble 
running them. If this drive is SMART compliant u can maybe look at any 
error the smart test return ? (SMART testing is included in seagate 
SeaTools AFAIK)
