Attempted Knoppix, bootdisks, now trying to compile under Knoppix.

Andy, thanks for your input [below]. I tried Knoppix, but they have an old
version of QTParted, and it's kind of buggy. Furthermore it doesn't let you
copy partitions between devices to make disk images, which is what I wanted to
do. So I decided to come back to parted. Besides, I'm kind of a
fundamentalist and prefer line mode anyway!

Here are my questions.

1) I tried booting from the boot disk. It asked for a second disk. I had
   saved the file partroot-1.6.6.gz to an ext2 formatted floppy, so I put that
   in. I got the following output:

   RAMDISK: Loading 1440 blocks [1 disk] into ramdisk ... done
   VFS: Mounted root (ext2 filesystem)
   Freeing unused kernel memory ... (some amount of memory)
   Warning: unable to open an initial console
   Kernel Panic: no init found. Try passing init= option to kernel.

   Can you tell me where I go from here? (Be easy on a newbie, please.)

2) Running Knoppix I unzipped and untarred parted-1.6.6.tar.gz onto a writable
   disk. If found the readme and hoped that it was telling me that by doing:

        $ ./configure
        $ cd doc
        $ make
        $ info -f parted.info

   I would be, besides getting access to the docs, compiling parted (?)
   ./configure was not able to find the e2fsprogs package. Is this possible?
   Since parted is a part of QTParted, doesn't that mean the e2fs package must
   be there? (I can't find it either.)

3) I noticed that Knoppix does not offer "raw write" for scsi devices, only
   "block mode". I don't actually know what this means, but would it interfere
   with my using parted to make copies of a boot partition on an IDE disk onto
   a SCSI disk?

Thanks, thanks, thanks!

Oops! I thought I had uploaded them successfully... I uploaded again
(hopefully it will work this time!)

No, but you can get qtparted (included in Knoppix), which does the job
:)

Cheers,
Andrew
