That is not true AFAIK.  EDD reports what the bios reports.  The 
HDIO_GETGEO reports crap and certainly not what EDD reports or at least 
not on any(!) PCs I have tried it.  If HDIO_GETGEO did report what EDD 
reports this thread would probably not need to exist...

What?  HDIO_GETGEO does not convince parted to use the right geometry!  In 
2.6 kernels it convinces parted to use the WRONG geometry and screw your 
data.  That is the whole point!

It is not only not wrong but completely correct.  The geometry is really 
something completely made up nowadays.  Nothing really needs it at the low 
level.  But a lot of software still use it.  The important thing is that 
all software on the same system agrees about the geometry of the disk 
otherwise they will conflict and in the worst case loose data (like the 
change in 2.6 kernels to HDIO_GETGEO has caused many a time because of 
parted and other aps taking the values to be the "right" ones but it 
reporting crap).
