resize luks partition

Greetings, the faq at http://www.gnu.org/software/parted/faq.html says
 Can I resize only the partition, leaving the file system as it is?
Not at this time. This feature is scheduled for 1.7.1 or 1.7.2, however.

I'm attempting to resize an efi gpt partition that is an encrypted luks
partition with parted 1.8.8

Model: Areca v0 (scsi)
Disk /dev/sda: 6000GB
Sector size (logical/physical): 512B/512B
Partition Table: gpt

Number  Start   End     Size    File system  Name  Flags
 1      17.4kB  4000GB  4000GB

parted /dev/sda resize 1 17.4kB 6000GB
Error: Could not detect file system.

Was the above feature ever implemented?  Will it be?  Are there any other
tools that can resize an efi gpt partition without regards to the
filesystem?  The idea is to just resize the partition, cryptsetup and the
filesystem on top of it have their own resizing utilities...
