On my Ubuntu 12.04, psql uses libedit instead of libreadline (not suprisingly):
$ ldd /usr/lib/postgresql/9.1/bin/psql
...
libedit.so.2 => /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libedit.so.2 (0x0044e000)
